You put your reminders of pain on the wall and pray to them. We still hurt, so we don’t need that reminder. BACKGROUND (in progress)IN BRIEF
1833
BORN WEASLE PLUME to WOLF CALF of the Black-Patched Moccasins, and CURLY HAIR WOMAN of the Small Robes. If he has any siblings, they are not mentioned. Wolf Calf, however, had three wives, so very likely does. Good Stab's mother "... had been taken from the Snakes as a child," making her very likely Shoshone, Paiute or Bannock. She died giving birth to Good Stab.
1845
While hunting with his father and other members of the Small Robes, Weasel Plume kills a white soldier with a 'good stab'. His father gives him the new name GOOD STAB, symbolizing that he has become a man. He is the first of his age group to receive a new name this way.
1945-70
Good Stab marries two women and has 3 children: two daughters and a son. He does not name any member of his immediate family except his parents He has a reputation of being slightly cocky among his people, and reckless. At some point, before the events of 1870:
- his wives and children are all killed during a raid by another tribe, specified only as 'Black Paint people.'
- he loses his rifle privileges after loaning his gun to an inexperienced boy, White Teeth, who loads the rifle with the wrong ammunition and has the gun backfire in his hands, losing three fingers.
1870
Good Stab is asked by old man Peasy to help him with a 'problem'. Prior to this, a member of the Small Robes, Owl Child, kills his white in-law and is subsequently hunted by white soldiers looking for revenge. The 'problem' turns out to be a party of dead white soldiers made to look like a pikuni raid.
While they are hiding the evidence, they discover a caged man, who appears to be mostly feral. After they try to kill him and fail, Peasy suggests he might their fabled white god and suggest they take him to Chief Mountain, to fulfil a prophecy of sorts. Good Stab names him the CAT MAN as he hisses and moves like a cat. As they're taking the caged man to the mountain, Good Stab discovers several beaver belts - almost enough to trade for a new gun. Desperately wanting a new gun, he wades down to a beaver lodge to kill one more beaver as he only needs one more pelt. This is forbidden among his people, and he knows this - but he does it anyway, and rationalises the choice to the point of delusion. As he destroys the beaver lodge, their group is attacked by white soldiers looking for Owl Child. In the fight, his group are killed and the man in the cage is set loose, killing almost all the soldiers before he turns attention on Good Stab. Before he can kill Good Stab, they are both hit by a canon. While the Cat Man is bisected, Good Stab accidentally ingests some of his blood before he dies. Good Stab awakens some time after this, running down hill. He has killed the soldiers, and realises as he's running, that they tried to cremate him as he's burnt all over. Here he realises three things: the sun hurts his eyes, his hearing and sense of smell have evolved beyond human understanding, and that he craves blood. He figures out fast that he can only ingest blood - marrow and meat make him sick. He tries to kill himself and realises he can't die. Winter now, Good Stab finds himself feeding on small animals. Eventually he falls asleep with a bear, and is able to share its dreams if he drinks from it. He is not able to do this with other animals.
1870 cont
At the same time of the events above, the Marias Massacre takes place. In the Buffalo Hunter Hunter's version of this, it's secondary pov character, Arthur Beaucarne, is revealed have been part of the raiding party, encouraging the massacre.
1870 cont
When Spring rolls around, Good Stab continues to feed on animals and learns that the more animals he eats, the more of their features and characteristics he takes on. He then begins to feed on white trappers.
During this time he comes across a herd of dead buffalo, hunted exclusively for their furs. The calves are left alive, still young enough to need to milk. Furious, Good Stab kills the trappers and hunters responsible and escapes with a white buffalo calf.
1874
Four winters after this, Good Stab has given the buffalo calf his childhood name: Weasel Plume. He has been saving calves from hunters over the last four years, enough to have his own herd.
He encounters a young boy and learns, in passing, of a massacre a few years prior. However, he scares the young boy off. While chasing after the young boy, he encounters a white trapper among his herd. Good Stab quickly realises that this is not a human trapper, but rather Napi, the pikuni trickster god. With Napi, Good Stab learns that by drinking too much white-man blood, he's starting to show white-man features. Napi tells him that to stay pikuni, he has to drink from pikuni - he also tells him to stay the winter with him, and then, eventually, that he should keep hunting the white hunters, too. Good Stab now has several names among his people: Takes No Scalps, The Fullblood. He's a legend among the people for killing white hunters and not taking their scalps. He is also drinking the blood of dying pikuni. While drinking the blood of a dying woman, he encounters his father again. He tries to smoke his fathers pipe and becomes violently sick, ending up with Napi again. He feeds on Napi the whole winter, which also restores his physical features to the way they had been. It takes two winters to recover, and all the while, Napi also teaches Good Stab how to speak English.
1876 - 78
Good Stabs spends most of his time hunting hide hunters and skinners. He feeds on dying Pikuni.
1878
Good Stab re-encounters the Cat Man, who has killed his heard of buffalo. He tries to kill the Cat Man in the hopes that the Cat Man will kill him. Instead, he's tricked into drinking his blood which completely immobilizes him. He wakes chained in the Cat Man's old cage, submerged in ice.
1878-??
Slowly, he begins to thaw out. The Cat Man feeds him a steady diet of lost pikuni and Shoshone people, and then eventually only white people. By the time he's strong enough to leave, he's mistaken for a white man by white trappers.
Good Stab makes his way to a small, surviving community of Small Robes - only to find that the Cat Man is now leading them, and now looks like one of them. They call him Walks Tiwce. The Cat Man tortures Good Stab both physically and psychologically for months like this, even forcing him to do a Sun Dance too early. Only one person is kind to him - a young girl called Kills In The Water. Much later, he discovers the Cat Man has killed the band as they wouldn't give him Kills In The Water. He reveals she has a special kind of blood that he wants desperately. Good Stab uses this - and her - to lure the Cat Man to his demise - not death. He weakens him enough to feed him a steady diet of white fish blood, until he transforms completely into a fish.
19?? - 1912
Good Stab spends considerable time tracking down Arthur Beaucarne. He feeds on several people in the small town, resulting in a small panic. He begins to recite his dark gospel to Arthur, eventually leading them both to the conclusion that he has been seeking Arthur out as revenge for the Marias Massacre of 1870.
Good Stab's revenge is this: he has killed Arthur's biological son and grandchildren (all except one), and several towns people. Eventually, he turns Arthur.
2013
Good Stab begins to play tricks on Etsy Beaucarne, Arthur's greatest-grand-daughter. He visits her wearing a BUFFALO HEAD to mess with her, and then leaves her with Arthur Beaucarne himself - though he's been partially transformed into a prairie dog after only feeding on them for a century.
He later watches Etsy kill and dismember her greatest grandfather, during a memorial of the Marias Massacre. Etsy realises that Good Stab has been living life normally, working construction, and that most importantly: he is still pikunki. IN DETAILGood Stab was born Weasel Plume in 1833, part of the Amskapi Pikuni, Small Robes band. He was given the name Good Stab by his father after he killed a white soldier with a 'particularly good stab' at 12 years old. That night around the fire I got the first tongue from the hunt, and the other boys looked at me in awe, the cut on my face not tended, and this is when one of the hunters told me that that had been a good stab I did with the arrow, and the rest of the hunters nodded with this, and when my father finally agreed with this, after looking long at me, that became who I was, Good Stab. I was the first of my age to get his warrior name. It carried a responsibility with it, I knew. Prior to his death at 37, he had two wives and children with both - none of which he names in his recounting, as these are his to keep. Up until his death, Good Stab lived what seems like a regular life, and held good community standing. In 1870, he heads out to clear up a raided wagon with Tall Dog, Hunt's-To-The-Side and Peasy - as it belongs to white soliders, Good Stab describes it as a necessity to clean the mess up: Later on in the ride, when our order in line changed from going across a creek, Hunts-to-the-Side explained that a wagon train had been attacked, and we needed to get to it before any other wagons found it, to hide it so the soldiers wouldn’t be even more angry with us than they already were. While most of the soldiers are dead upon discovery, Peasy realises whoever attacked the wagon company had tried to make it look a Pikuni raid. While investigating further Good Stab discovers a creature he describes as mostly animal, and which he names the Cat Man because 'he acted like one.' It was the whitest napikwan any of us had ever seen, with the blackest hair long on his head but nowhere else, and it was locked in a cage big enough for a tall man to sit in. The cage looked like it had been made from the round, square barrels of your long-shooter guns, which we hadn’t seen yet, but would soon. After trying to kill it, they realise it can't die, Peasy suggests it might be The Great White God, and that they should take it to Chief Mountain to see if it'll crumble as foretold. While preparing to move the Cat Man, Good Stab discovers beaver pelts he hopes to trade for a gun later; realising he would need one more, he commits the sin of destroying a beaver lodge to kill one last beaver to take his belt. The diversion, however, leads to his friends being killed by white soldiers - all of them are killed, however Peasy releases the Cat Man is his last moments, hoping it will avenge them. The Cat Man manages to kill several of the soldiers before turning on Good Stab - before he can kill him, however, they are both shot with a canon - and while dying, Good Stab swallows the Cat Man's blood, sealing his fate. I fell to the side, away from the cannon and the soldier, and because the Cat Man was uphill on his hard drift from me, the blood from his waist and his stomach where he’d been parted, it rolled in a fast steaming river down the top of the snow at my face, was warm on my lips but cold against my teeth, and when it got to my throat I coughed but had to breathe in to do it, meaning I sucked this blood deep into me like breath. After waking again, Good Stab realises he has an unsatiable thirst for blood, and after feeding on animals for long enough, he realises too much animal blood causes him to begin to show animal features. Reluctantly, he feeds on a fellow pikuni. Later, after coming across a slaughtered and skinned herd of buffalo, he resolves to only feed on napikwan hunters, becoming a legend among his people known as The Fullblood and Takes No Scalps. For a while, he lives in relative peace feeding on white hunters once a year and begins raising his own buffalo heard, beginning with a white calf he names Weasel Plume, after his own childhood. Later still, he meets Napi, masquerading as a white trapper. While lodging with him over the winter, Napi tells him that by eating so many white hunters, he's beginning to turn into one - making Good Stab realise he has begun to grow facial hair and develop white features. The only way to undo it is to feed from his own people. Horrified, but desperate to hold onto himself and where he comes from, he resolves only to eat from the dying. PERSONALITY⇋ COCKY ⇋ CONFIDENT ⇋ STUBBORN ⇋ RESENTFUL ⇋ LOYAL ABILITIESGood Stab is a vampire, which comes with most of the usual set of abilities: ⇋ Speed - fast as shit boi ⇋ Compulsion - implied (but not directly stated in the book) level of compulsion against human. Most obvious argument is that he is compelling Arthur to write down his dark gospel, and Cat Man's ability to insert himself into the pikuni tribe later in the book. ⇋ Strength - strong as hell, perhaps as strong as ten men or more. ⇋ Healing - the more blood he drinks the faster he heals. He will heal completely, no scars. ⇋ Immortal - cannot die! ⇋ Enhanced hearing - can hear everything, everywhere, all of the time. ⇋ Supernatural smell - specifically, Good Stab is able to smell odd details about people, including cultural backgrounds, species, and sometimes small details about where they have been or where they come from: The next man I woke with blackhorn calf blood in his mouth, my knees already on his arms, he had a Pikuni mother. I could smell it. I could smell her through his skin. Like me, he didn’t have a beard. “Good Stab,” he said, so I could understand it, and then I knew him. He wasn’t Joe Kipp, but he was like Joe Kipp. His dad was a napikwan trader who had married a Pikuni, Kicking Bird Woman. I remembered this man now, from when he’d come through camp once, dragging a sledge of fresh mink and otter and muskrat, because he’d found a valley in the Backbone that had never known traps. After feeding, Good Stab will generally sleep for a long period of time, especially if he drains a victim. If he drinks too much of one thing, he will begin to look like it - if he drinks too many animals, he takes on animal features such as snouts, horns, etc. Likewise, if he drinks too much of one race, he starts to show qualities such as whiter skin, blue eyes, lighter hair etc. CONTENT WARNINGS⇋ GOOD STAB - As a vampire, he comes with the usual warnings for: vore, blood drinking, excessive violence and gore, and likely dubcon due to either intentional or partial vampiric compulsion. Good Stab additionally comes with a warning for traumatic themes in his introspection regarding his identity as pikuni/Blackfeet, the Marias Massacre, his resentment of European settlers (and additionally, his feelings of complacency regarding them in the past, and having to make peace with them in the present), and occasional suicidal ideation. ⇋ THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER - general warnings for historical attempts at indigenous genocide, graphic depictions of murder, vampirism, revenge, historically racist sentiments, cultural and identity struggles, and generational trauma. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
